Tom McConnell
Precinct Committeeman Tom McConnell

By Susan Bickel, Recording Secretary

Thanks to the work of Precinct Committeeman Tom McConnell, the LD9 website has detailed maps of 58 precincts in the district — see https://ld9dems.com/precinct-maps/.

Tom is a data guy. He holds an MBA in quantitative methods from the University of Michigan and spent 25 years in research, statistics and market customer research for the Ford Motor Company.

In between, Tom joined the U.S. Army as a linguist. He was assigned to top-secret work translating documents and information that remain top secret to this day.

After retiring from Ford, Tom started his own consulting firm, which he eventually sold to his biggest customer. He stayed on for a time, doing worldwide mapping and data analysis. He also taught geographic information systems, and worked with the leaders of Rwanda and South Africa to build their coffee export businesses.

Tom has brought this lifetime of expertise to Pima County politics, crunching numbers to help Democratic candidates get elected. When he lived in LD 11, Tom analyzed how candidates could motivate this deep red district to vote Democratic – or at least not vote Republican.

And Tom has made it easy for you to find your precinct and precinct map. He used free data from Pima County, which Tom says “may be the best data available in the entire country.”

Sharing Tom’s results, LD 9 has posted these maps online. To find your precinct and map, go to https://ld9dems.com/precinct-maps/.  We think you will find these maps easy to use and more detailed than the county’s maps.

Tom and his wife now live at The Fountains Assisted Living community. Fortunately for us, this facility is in LD9, and we’re the grateful recipients of Tom’s work.

Tom is already looking for the next big challenge. He says it should be easy to map Pima County, and he’s hoping that the Arizona Democratic Party will be interested in funding the mapping for the other counties in Arizona. He is also looking at designing a challenge targeting Independents and Democrats who don’t vote consistently.

Whatever he does, we are grateful that Tom is using his retirement years – and his wealth of experience – to help LD9. Thank you, Tom!
