Lisa Wolfe, Precinct 230
Huge political contributions by groups whose membership is secret are heavily influencing Arizona elections and legislation. This enormous influx of money is called “dark money,” or “dirty money,” because it comes from wealthy contributors outside Arizona seeking to control our elected officials and our laws, while hiding their identities and political agendas.
The Outlaw Dirty Money Initiative would give Arizonans the right to know who is funding campaigns and ballot propositions, how much is being spent, and for what purpose.
This is a corollary to the Save Our Schools (SOS) referendum we circulated during the summer of 2017, requesting that voters be allowed to vote on the new voucher-expansion law. Dirty money got us the voucher law in the first place and dirty money financed the lawsuit against the referendum petition. (The courts dismissed the lawsuit but its backer might appeal).
In 2014, $10.3 million in dark/dirty money was spent in Arizona. Even some Republicans think that’s a bad thing. Lobbyist Chris Herstam, former Republican Arizona House majority whip and chief of staff to a Republican governor, has said: “In my 33 years in Arizona politics and government, dark money is the most corrupting influence I have seen.”
Visit www.outlawdirtymoney.com to see which legislators got secret “dirty money” contributions and to learn what has happened as a result of elections for the Arizona Corporation Commission.
To get the initiative on the ballot, we need 300,000 signatures. That’s three times the signatures we got on the SOS campaign! Please help us circulate petitions. Contact me at my email address to get them. Bring your completed petitions to the LD9 meeting in February to have them notarized.
