It has not always been like this, even under Republican leadership. The extremist Republican attack on the democracy we cherish is not over. The threat is greater now than it was on January 6.
Republicans know they represent a shrinking minority of Americans. They know the only way they can win is to deploy the extremist strategies corruptly:
- Lying and cheating
- Fanning the flames of racist fear politics
- Suppressing the vote of anyone who is not “their” voter
- Creating state laws that knee-cap fair and open elections
- Gerrymandering: allowing politicians to pick their voters
How does this story end? If extremist Republicans succeed, they will empower themselves to overturn the will of Arizonans. This is not democracy.
In an extremist America, the fruits of prosperity will be reserved for wealthy and white loyalists. In the extremist world, as in Putin’s Russia, the truth will be outlawed and replaced with official disinformation. If the extremist Republicans win, this will be the last election where our votes count.
It does not have to end like this. By voting as we did in 2020, we can protect and preserve our fundamental rights and freedoms to:
- Vote and have our votes count
- Control our own bodies and make our own reproductive choices
- Love and marry whomever we choose
- Travel freely from state to state
- Live safely, without fear of mass shootings
- Educate our children free of censorship
We must prevent this nightmare. Though extremists are threatening our votes, they still count. Fight back:
- Spot and call out the lies wherever you encounter them.
- Vote—no matter how difficult they make it. Vote as if your life depends on it — because is does.
Vote only for candidates we know who are committed to protecting our cherished freedoms.
