Arizona Democrats are urged to sign three petitions circulated by Arizona Deserves Better that would undo voter suppression laws just passed by the state legislature. These egregious new election laws drastically lower the number of voters allowed to vote early or by mail and make it more difficult for voters to correct technical errors on legally-cast ballots.

SB 1485: “PEVL Purge.” Removes voters from the Early Voting List (formerly Permanent Early Voting List) if they don’t vote by mail in any elections for two election cycles.

SB 2569: Bars election officials from accepting private grants to help them run elections or register voters.

SB 1819: A collection of election measures, including limiting the Secretary of State’s power to defend election challenges, giving that power to the AZ Attorney General, bar codes on ballots, and requiring detailed monitoring of county voter registration efforts.

Merrill Eisenberg, the Pima County contact for Arizona Deserves Better.

“We need every single person reading this newsletter to step up and help collect signatures for these petitions so that Arizona voters can decide on these measures,” said Merrill Eisenberg, the Pima County contact for the Arizona Deserves Better effort.

The statewide signature goal for the referenda is 170,000 signatures. The effort aims to collect 119,000 valid signatures to provide a good cushion because there are always signatures and whole petitions that are disqualified because of technical issues.  “Because Pima County and its environs account for about 20% of the registered voters in Arizona, we need to collect about 34,000 signatures down here in the Tucson area,” Eisenberg said.

The Arizona Constitution allows citizens to undo bad laws that have been passed by the legislature and signed by the governor through the referendum process.  Signatures from 5% of the voters will stop a bad law and put it on the ballot for the voters to decide. You are in the process of getting enough signatures to get some of the most egregious new election laws from being enacted, and putting those laws on the 2022 ballot.

Circulators are the heart of our campaign — you are by far our most precious resource. Several depots are established, places where precinct committee people and volunteers can go to get petitions notarized, turn them in, and sign out some more.
