Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs spoke in Tucson at the Nucleus Club meeting on June 13, 2019.
- “It’s no secret that Michelle Reagan ran a bad office and was pretty incompetent,” she said. “It was a financial mess.” Hobbs had to get a $700 million supplemental appropriation just to finish the fiscal year “because the previous administration left things in such a mess.”
- Hobbs is rewriting the outdated Elections Procedure Manual from 2014. She will have an updated draft by early Fall.
- Hobbs is working to re-establish good relations with the county recorders, which was not done in the previous administration. “I’ve spent more time in the Secretary of State’s office in 5 months than Michelle Reagan spent in 5 years.”
- Her office had updated the voter registration form to make it simpler and clearer.
- She will work to increase online voter registration. Now there is a limitation of 5 voters who can be registered from a single computer IP address, which hobbles registrations made at county fairs and public booths.
- Hacking and election security is a major concern, but the bigger problem is public misinformation. “We need to have a coordinated message to voters to get accurate information.” She is working with the Clean Elections Commission and county recorders.
- Michelle Reagan squandered a grant from the Help America Vote fund by securing her own office, but not the 10 counties of Arizona.
