Considering the decades-long plan to “distort the court” with extremists who eventually gutted Roe v. Wade, here are four things the Democratic Party and its activists should have learned.

  1. Take nothing for granted. Freedom has many aspects that intertwine with others. The “not my circus, not my monkeys” attitude does not release anyone from their responsibilities as a citizen. We must constantly perform oversight and upkeep on all forms of freedom. By the way, if you are irresponsible enough not to vote or prefer to submit a “protest vote,” shame on you for your complicity.
  1. Check your blind optimism. It’s a form of denialism. The phrase “we have checks and balances” is only as useful as our leaders’ ability and willingness to wield them. When those checks and balances are intentionally dismantled, we have an uphill battle to regain control. Be pragmatic.
  1. Fight fire with fire. We can no longer afford to “go high” when our dangerous opponents have shown no low point is off-limits. Virtue-signaling idealism doesn’t win battles against those who disregard established norms. Yes, you can still maintain civility to a degree but do not fail to take immediate, purpose-driven action against any hint of tyranny. Social niceties aside, productive anger is the key.
  1. Play the long game. Incrementalism works if you have a detailed, strategic plan with targets and milestones. Politics isn’t a business, per se, but it certainly can benefit from long-term project management. Not sure what I mean? Review the Religious Right’s history since 1973 in crippling abortion rights. The Supreme Court’s vote to overrule Roe vs. Wade didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen.

Contrary to the late singer Janis Joplin’s assertion that “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose,” Americans have everything to lose by not defending our hard-won freedoms. We are way past due on fulfilling our obligation to safeguard democracy. So stop blaming others and start pulling your weight.

Rise up or shut up.
