Precinct committee people from across LD9 and LD10 got an early jump on the 2020 election by learning how to create maps and walk lists of voters using the Democrats’ Voter Activation Network (VAN).
“The VAN is a powerful tool with a lot of functionality,” said organizer Lori Cinnamond, a committee person in precinct #171. “You can look up information, find if someone registered as a Democrat or Republican if they are on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) and can create a list based on criteria, like who didn’t vote in 2016.”
Precinct committeemen Steve Dudick of Precinct 89 and Nick Arnold of Precinct 82 went into detail on creating a walk list, known as “cutting a turf,” and finding specific voters, such as independents who are considered Democratic-leaning.
For example, I used “quick look up” to check my own record and details sorted by demographics, address, contact info, districts, survey responses, voting history and “scores,” showing I am 98.68 likely to vote Democratic. The ability to get a profile of a particular voter makes it easy to start a conversation with the person.
The real gold in the VAN database is “create list,” where, for example, I can conduct a search of Democrats who live in my precinct, #238, and are on the PEVL list of early voters. This search produced a list of 735 people, 466 home phones,
543 doors and 548 mailboxes.
Using mouse clicks to create a box, I created a “turf” which could be saved and printed out as a walk list organized by street address.
“This will make you a valuable resource for candidates, the county Democratic Party, and the campaigns,” Cinnamond said. Stay tuned to the LD9 website for notices of future training sessions.
