Activist Cheat Sheet Week of March 15, 2021

By Deb Bonjouklian

The time to RTS is winding down as the number of bills in committee will be ending after March 26th so use this time to make your voice heard!

Be aware there is an effort underfoot to expand ESA vouchers via a “compromise amendment” to SB1452 – the notorious bill to expand vouchers to two-thirds of Arizona students.  This bill has been on our list to OPPOSE and now it’s time to let your House representatives know that there’s no compromise that is acceptable to expand ESA vouchers.

OK, now for the upcoming bills in committee that you can use RTS this week.

Monday, March 15, 2021

2366 – OPPOSE – Increases the criminal speeding threshold from 85 to 90.

2395 – SUPPORT- Makes it illegal for people to park their vehicles such that they block the sidewalk.

2569 – OPPOSE – Non-binding resolution opposing federal action to regulate state elections.

Nothing of note.

Wednesday, March 17, 2021

1003 – OPPOSE – Ballot cure restriction

1010 – OPPOSE – If you can post a bond to cover the cost, you can demand a recount of any election.

1083 – OPPOSE – Allows a requirement to automatically do a recount when elections are within 0.5%.  Waste of time and money.

1105 – OPPOSE – Increases ballot summaries from 100 to 200 words.

1127 – OPPOSE- Lowers the fines for speeding.

1260- OPPOSE – Exempts disabled veterans from state property taxes.

1377 – OPPOSE – Exempt businesses from COVID-related liability, thus stripping protections from workers and the public.

1382 – OPPOSE – Allows firearms and ammunition stores as “essential businesses”.

1409 – OPPOSE – Adds to the bureaucracy of the zoning processes for affordable housing developments.

1452 – OPPOSE – Expansion of ESA vouchers – Big Time!  Beware that his bills backed by the dark-money Goldwater Institute and would drain money from the Prop 208 funding.

1457 – OPPOSE – Attack on the rights and agency of women.

1497 – OPPOSE – Requires ballots and publicity pamphlets to carry a “Prop 108 disclosure”.  This bill is an attempt to discourage voters from passing their own laws.

1558 – SUPPORT -Funding for construction on the Ganado School Loop Road.

1531 – OPPOSE – Requirement to read the descriptions of petitions out loud to signers.  Really?  Can you imagine how that would impact the ability to collect signatures for voter-initiated propositions?

1714 – OPPOSE  – Requirement to disclose “paid for by” on campaign ads to expose out-of-state contributors.  FUN FACT:  The sponsor, JD Mesnard (R-17) has publicly groused about how much money was spent against him in the last election cycle.  Do you really think this is a bill for the” public and large’s” benefit?  I think not!

1793 – OPPOSE – Voter Suppression Alert!  This bill requires the secretary of state to purge deceased voters from the statewide voter registration database – this already happens on a regular basis.

SCR1019 – Companion bill to 1260 above.

SCR1024 – OPPOSE  – Asks voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to require any citizen’s initiative that raises/lowers taxes to pass with a 2/3 vote.  A direct attack on voter rights.

Thursday, March 18, 2021

2309 – OPPOSE – Attack on peaceful protesting by making it a felony to be involved in “violent or disorderly assembly”.  Have these people ever been to a Yankees vs Red Sox game when the stakes were high!

2551 – OPPOSE – Allows weapons in libraries, community centers, public pools, state museums, the DMV, government offices, block parties, marches and street fairs if the owner has a concealed weapons permit.

2840 – OPPOSE – Allows loaded guns in gun-free school zones when parents are dropping off and picking up children.

RTS – House and Senate Rules Committee

Rules meets only to determine whether bills are constitutional and in the proper format.  Lawmakers do not read comments but you can still weigh in on them as they will be going into regular committees for discussion.  Positions must be entered by 9 AM Monday.
