Pamela Powers Hannley, State Rep. for LD9, presented a comprehensive, bright progressive future for Arizona at the Democrats of Greater Tucson meeting on Aug. 24, 2020.
Powers Hannley was elected to the Arizona House to serve Legislative District 9 in 2016, and she is running for her third term.
Among many topics, Rep. Hannley discussed:
- Economic and public health challenges facing the Legislature in January 2021;
- Envisioning a more just post-COVID19 world; and
- Why Arizona and the US need a Blue Wave in November 2020 to have any chance of building a more just world.
As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, Powers Hannley is a strong opponent of corporate tax giveaways and is the only person in the Arizona House who voted against every one of them in her four years of service. She wants to bring sanity and fiscal responsibility to Arizona.
She believes that the Arizona Legislature should fund the People’s To-Do List — education, healthcare, infrastructure and safety, and security — instead of the corporate wish list. As a four-year member of the House Health Committee, Powers Hannley has fought for reproductive rights, science-based medicine, workers compensation, expanded maternal and child healthcare, fair insurance practices, and expanded eligibility for AHCCCS, TANF, and childcare subsidies.
Powers Hannley grew up in Amherst, Ohio, on the banks of Lake Erie, and moved to Tucson in 1981. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University (1973) and a master’s in public health from The University of Arizona (UA, 1996).
For most of her career, she worked in public relations and corporate communication. For several years, she had her own small business as a freelance writer, photographer, and graphic designer. While working in the communication office of the Arizona Cancer Center at the UA, she started writing cancer prevention materials; this sparked her interest in public health, behavioral medicine, and prevention. After earning an MPH, her career shifted to research and public health program management. She was involved in several cancer prevention research projects including Five a Day for Better Health, Family Sun Safety, and smoking uptake by adolescents. She also was the program director for the Arizona Smokers Helpline and related Internet and evaluation services in the UA College of Public Health.
Between 2004-2016, she was managing editor for the American Journal of Medicine, one of the world’s top internal medicine journals. In January 2016, she stepped down as managing editor to become the Journal’s part-time social media/technology editor. Working part-time gives her the time to serve in the Arizona House. She is running for her third term.
