Senator Victoria Steele and Representative Pamela Powers-Hannley met with approximately 20 constituents at their second Town Hall at Woods Memorial Library on April 6, 2019.

Topics ranged from the difficulty Democrats have all during the current legislative session to get their bills heard in Committee.  If a bill is not. Heard in Committee it cannot advance to the House of Senate floor for a vote.

There were several disappointing bills this session, many focusing on various voter suppression, sub-minimum wages for people under age 22 (now on ice), restrictions on referendum petitions.

On the bright side, however, are a few bills well supported by Democrats, and heading toward final passage and the Governor’s signature:  suicide prevention training for guidance counselors, teachers, principals, and school personnel, a bill to help victims of sexual assault get needed restraining orders.

The Rosemont Mine was raised by a constituent.  While it was acknowledged that it’s too late, that progress is underway, many were unaware that the legislature doesn’t, nor ever had, a say in it.  Concerns stated were about effect on the environment, the extraordinary amount of water needed in mining plus the fact that there are no fees imposed by the State or County for extraction.

Another Town Hall will be held next month.  In the meantime, visit their Facebook pages at www.facebook.com/VictoriaSteeleAZ and www.facebook.com/PamelaPowersHannleyforHouse/
