Hundreds of Tucson Democrats braved the cold wind to participate in the country-wide rally and marches on December 17, 2019 to show their support for impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump.
A large crowd, between 750 and 1000 people, started gathering at 4:30 pm and by 5:30 people lined the sidewalk down Congress for a whole block, down Granada about one-half block. People were standing 4-5 people deep. Some who couldn’t see crossed the street to form another venue.
The event was organized by two LD9 Precinct Committeewomen: Dr. Eve Shapiro and Jenise Porter.
I was so proud to see our Democrats carrying mostly homemade signs with a variety of messages calling for Impeachment, decrying the threats to our democracy and constitution.
Richard Elias, Chair of Pima Board of Supervisors, Ron Barber for Ann Kirkpatrick, Ruben Reyes for Raul Grijalva, among others spoke to the crowd, each one a powerful voice of reason why impeachment and removal of office is necessary to
preserve our democracy. The younger Dems — Carlos Martinez, Andres Cano, Alex Kack, Kyle Kline, Billy Peard, and an aide to Mayor Regina Romero — were especially impressive. They addressed issues with a depth of knowledge and passion that fills my heart with hope that their leadership will help guide us toward a better and brighter future.
Across the street on Congress was a very small number of Republicans, trying to be heard but the Dems yelled louder drowning out their calls. What a huge difference in the demeanor of the two groups.
The Dems were crowded, huddling together in the cold wind. Across the street, Trumpists stood facing us, almost as though in a face off. Some had guns, some carried oversize American flags, some (maybe all) wore red hats. None of them looked happy.
On our side, a group, the Tucson Raging Grannies, sang songs to the tune of Christmas Carols with lyrics calling for impeachment. They were wonderful.
