Susan Bickel, Precinct 158
“My vote doesn’t matter, so why should I bother?”
How many times have we all heard this disheartening response when we urge citizens to register, sign up for PEVL (the Permanent Early Voting List) or show up at the polls? It has never been true, but at no time has it been less true than now. Every single vote counts, and here’s concrete evidence that we can offer to prove it:
-Democrat Conor Lamb’s victory over Republican Rick Saccone in Pennsylvania’s 18th district in a March 2018 special election – in a Republican-gerrymandered district. Lamb beat Saccone by 627 votes in a race that brought 228,378 voters to the polls.
-Democrat Doug Jones’s victory over Roy Moore for the Senate in an Alabama special election in December 2017. Alabama! Where no Democrat had won a Senate seat in 25 years. Jones won by 21,000 votes out of 1.3 million, just over 1 percent.
-In another December 2017 special election, Democrat Shelly Simonds defeated Republican incumbent David Yancey by a single vote, 11,608 to 11,607, for the Virginia House of Delegates. She ultimately lost because a court awarded a disputed ballot to Yancey, and a random draw in Yancey’s favor broke the tie. If one more Democrat had voted, Simonds would now be a Delegate – and the balance of state power would have shifted to Virginia’s Democrats for the first time in 17 years.
It’s eight months to the midterm elections, and every race, from school board to U.S. Senate, deserves our full attention and energy. We can turn Arizona Blue if we can convince all Democrats to vote. Let your passion – and these stunning examples – do the convincing.
Thank you to all our passionate LD9 PCs and Volunteers for all that you do! We are making a difference!
