By Teresa Gerschutz, a Democratic Precinct Committee Person in Precinct 239.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers marched into Galveston, Texas. They announced the end of the Civil War two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law, marking the end of slavery. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law to officially designate Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Given that tidbit of history, I cannot think of a better time for Tucsonans to gather at beautiful Kennedy Park and celebrate not only the freedom of our beloved African American families but also another of the many wonderful cultural diversities in Tucson.
This year there will be a large festival in Tucson to celebrate Juneteenth. It’s Saturday: June 18 @ 11:00 am – 9:00 pm MST. The location is Kennedy Park, 3357 S. La Cholla Blvd., Tucson, 85713.
The Pima County Democratic Party will have a table where we will gather signatures, voter registration and more. Additionally, the African American caucus will have a table with similar activities.
Larry Waggoner, the LD17 Chair, is heading up the Pima County Democrats’ efforts. To volunteer, contact Larry at [email protected] or (520) 441-9799 (home) or (520) 329-9739 (cell).
If you want to set up a table, you can find the prices of the vendor spaces in the Vendor Application at https://forms.gle/oTDrwhjLbmN1quA7A. For questions, vendors can email [email protected], or send a message on the Tucson Juneteenth Festival Facebook Page.
