Blood drive - Steve Early
Steve Early, a member of the DGT Board, prepares to take the temperature of a donor the old fashioned way — with a thermometer under the tongue.

The annual DGT blood drive on May 8, 2020, netted 11 pints of blood. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

It was a fun afternoon with four DGT board members greeting and registering donors, many of whom were ardent Democrats. Democrats of Greater Tucson is proud to serve the Tucson community and support patients who desperately need a blood transfusion.

The Blood Drive started with the arrival of the enormous Red Cross Blood Mobile bus before Noon at the Pima County Democratic Headquarters. Red Cross site manager Tauheed Chaudry trained our eager volunteers to register donors.

Thanks to the helpful planning of Samantha Bivens, Account Manager for the Red Cross, we had all  20 slots booked for the afternoon.

  • We had a goal to collect 15 pints of blood.
  • We had 15 present to give blood. The few no-shows were balanced out by walk-ins of people who saw the Bloodmobile.
  • Of those 15, we were able to collect 11 pints — enough precious blood to save a potential 33 lives!

We had a great time. Christina Early greeted new arrivals and went over essential donation guidelines with donors, and distributed nitrile gloves and masks.

Steve Early supplied his practical enthusiasm and took donors’ temperature to make sure it was lower than 98.5 degrees. We let donors sit in the air conditioning to cool off first. Steve also checked names off our list.

We all wore masks and gloves, practiced social distancing, and wiped down surfaces to make it a healthy, virus-free experience.

Susie Anderson assisted at every stage, and even signed up two donors to be on the vote by mail list (PEVL).

I organized the blood drive, scanned donors’ driver licenses on a computer connected to the Bloodmobile, and donated a pint himself (type O positive).

“Staff reported that you and your volunteers did a fantastic job and were a real pleasure to work with,” said Samantha Bivens.

What could be a better time than to hang with fellow Democrats, do community service, and discuss current politics?
