About two-thirds of University of Arizona employees are uncomfortable with the school’s plans to resume modified in-person instruction, according to one survey.

The Coalition for Academic Justice at the University of Arizona, known as CAJUA, surveyed faculty, staff, and graduate students in June about their thoughts on the university’s reentry plans. In results released Monday, about two-thirds of the 1,279 respondents said they’re not comfortable returning to campus for in-person classes.

“This survey was done as cases were beginning to spike in Arizona,” said Celeste Gonzalez de Bustamante, an associate professor at UA and member of CAJUA. “If this survey were done today, I’m sure that number would be even higher.”

Despite rising coronavirus infection rates in the state and announcements from private universities and community colleges saying they will delay in-person instruction, all three of Arizona’s public universities are on a path to reopening their campuses to in-person classes in August.

Faculty at other schools are also worried about their school’s reentry plans. Multiple longtime NAU professors have published opinion columns, compiled research, and started petitions to speak out about their concerns.

The survey revealed that employees are not only concerned about the personal risks associated with the reopening campus but also the potential impacts to Tucson.

Many believe that the university’s decision to move forward with its reentry plans represents a decision to prioritize “economics over public health,” according to the news release.

The university is set to begin classes in five weeks, on Aug. 24, and most on-campus students would arrive on campus before Aug. 22.

UA President Robert C. Robbins said in a weekly news conference Thursday that more than 6,600 students have put down deposits for on-campus living. All on-campus students will receive an antigen test before moving into their dorms, he added.

The university will be offering classes in four modalities — in-person, flex in-person, live online and iCourse.

“Every class will look different,” Robbins said.

About 50% of courses in each department are expected to be offered in-person, according to an university official.
