Activists in LD9 are preparing now for the 2022 election, because as soon as statewide redistricting is complete next spring, campaigning will get underway immediately. To that end, the leadership of LD9 outlined the strategy going forward. They include:

- Susan Bickel, LD9 Chair on upcoming Pima County Democrats and LD9 Priorities
- Wally Marcus on Democratic Candidate Recruitment
- Deb Bonjouklian on the Mission for Arizona Recruiting Project
- Maria Hidalgo on Upcoming PC Training and Mentorship Opportunities
“Organization, strategy, and hard work pay off,” Lori said. General election data shows that LD9 outperforms other LDs, with the third-largest Democratic turnout across the state.
Susan Bickel outlined what redistricting will and will not change.
“Today we have Joe Biden for President and he’s done wonderful things,” she said. “With the American Rescue Act, we can stand up and take pride in what we’re doing. The Democratic party is the party that moves the country forward,” she said.
Wally Marcus is working to recruit candidates and get Democrats elected, by providing resources, information, and training. There are 48 boards and commissions in Pima County, which are great places to start a political career — see the list at tiny.cc/LD9-2022. Supervisor Rex Scott agreed to take suggestions for people he can appoint to these offices. The tactic takes a page from the Republicans and the Koch Brothers, who have funded local-level candidates who eventually were elected to the state legislature.

Deb Bonjouklian added that LD9 started with 1,223 people to contact, and either emailed or left messages for 887 of these. “We still have 336 contacts to make,” she said, “These are in precincts that I have not heard back from.”
LD9 recruiting efforts have resulted in at least 29 new volunteers in LD9 to date, “but our work is not done,” Deb said. The response for at least half of the people contacted was very positive and some are interested in volunteer work.
PC Training & PC Mentoring Opportunities
Maria Hidalgo said that this coming year is an important transition period due to redistricting. “LD9 is forming a new team to coordinate PC Training,” she said. “Our focus will be to use excellent and existing online training from various Democratic sources,” including the National Democratic Training Center, the Arizona Democratic Party Academy, and the Pima County Democratic Party. “This will be the primary way for LD9 PCs to develop their activist skill sets,” she said.
“Our goal is to develop easily accessible links and resources to empower PCs with personal accountability for completing essential/necessary training opportunities,” Maria said. “Precinct PC Leads’ role will be more critical than ever in training communications.”
