Sharing the good work of our LD9 legislators, Meg Pradelt, Precinct 61

My issue is gun-safety legislation, so I’m so fortunate to live in LD9, which boasts some real champions in the Arizona Legislature: Rep. Randy Friese and Sen. Steve Farley.

Since so few bills that Democrats introduce ever see the light of day, I wanted to highlight some of the work they’re doing to make our state safer.

Rep. Friese has introduced five bills related to firearm safety. He is seeking a ban on bump-fire devices like those used in the mass shooting in Las Vegas (HB2023). He has re-introduced a bill to require background checks for all gun sales (HB2024).

His mental-health injunction bill would allow family members to request removal of firearms from a home when a loved one is in the midst of a mental health crisis (HB2140), while HB2299 addresses the issue of removing guns from domestic violence offenders. His fifth bill is HCR2001, which seeks to put the background- check issue on the ballot in 2018. Whew!

Sen. Farley introduced SCR1015, the Senate version of Rep. Friese’s background-check bill. He also co-sponsored the Senate versions of the mental health injunction and domestic violence bills.

If you want to see these bills assigned to committees, call the House Judiciary & Public Safety Committee chair, Eddie Farnsworth, at 602-926-5735, and the Senate Judiciary Committee chair, Judy Burges, at 602-926-5861.

While I would love to be playing offense and promoting action on these bills, my advocacy work is playing defense against an onslaught of bad gun bills. If you’d like to be part of that fight, please send me an email.
