Historically, Democrats lose mid-term elections because they don’t vote. So let’s change that in 2022. The Primary Election in Arizona is Tuesday, August 2. The General Election is Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

Visit Plan Your Vote covers everything you need to know about the voting rules where you live, including registration, mail-in voting, changes since 2020, and more.

To help plan our votes, we need to recognize key races in Arizona.

While in office, Republican Governor Ducey degraded our schools, supported voter suppression, and signed laws to hurt women’s and LGBTQ rights — to name a few of the pains he caused us. Another Republican Governor will be worse, as the GOP has become a more anti-democratic party. Democrats have highly-qualified candidates running for AZ Governor, who can win this seat only with our votes.

Democratic candidates for Governor include:

  • Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s current secretary of state.
  • Aaron Lieberman, a former lawmaker, represented Paradise Valley and north-central Phoenix starting in 2019.

Another empty seat, equally as important this midterm, is the Secretary of State. Trump-supported Republican Mark Finchem is running for this seat. He says if elected, he will use the power to change the outcome of our elections. Finchem attended the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. Videos proved he was in front of the east steps after the rioters breached the barricades outside the Capitol. My fear, if he is elected, he will illegally hand Republicans wins throughout the state.

Democratic candidates include:

  • State Rep. Reginald Bolding, D-Laveen, is the Democratic leader in the Arizona House of Representatives.
  • Adrian Fontes is the former Maricopa County recorder.

We have all witnessed the shenanigans and money-wasting lawsuits by our current Attorney General. The Republican candidates running for this seat lack professionalism and favor right-wing fringe agendas. This seat has the power to hurt many hard-working Arizonans — students in grades K-12, LGBTQ and much more. Voting for a Democrat for our next Attorney General will ensure fair elections, education improvements and opportunities for all Arizonans.

The Democratic candidates include:

  • Kris Mayes is a law professor and attorney who served seven years on the Arizona Corporation Commission.
  • State Rep. Diego Rodriguez of Phoenix served one term in the Arizona House of Representatives.

The thought of an Arizona republican as our State Treasurer is frightening. This position oversees withdrawals and deposits from state and local governmental agencies, keeps records of our debts and credits, and processes checks to state employees and vendors. The seat exclusively manages the Permanent Land Endowment, runs the tuition programs (529 plans), and more. How can Arizonans entrust our money to a Trump-backed party?

The Superintendent of Public Instruction enforces the State Board of Education’s policies, distributes state education funds and more. Incumbent Democrat, Kathy Hoffman, began her career in Vail School District, then Peoria’s. She has fought tirelessly for equal access to high-quality public education for everybody.

Two (out of five) Corporation Commission seats open this midterm election. Remember to vote for two Democrats. This most valuable office regulates the rates, business practices, health and safety of many utilities. It also regulates corporations, securities, railroads and pipelines. The Democrats candidates believe if they fill the majority of these seats, they can turn Arizona green, that we will lead the country in sustainable energy. In contrast, Republicans will reverse the green energy progress we have.

The Democratic candidates are:

  • Incumbent Sandra Kennedy was first elected in 2018.
  • Lauren Kuby, a two-term councilmember and former vice mayor of Tempe. She is a sustainability scientist at Arizona State University
  • Scientist and Engineer Jonathon Hill.
